Facing the Storm-10

Keep calm and eat cake

Mum’s 85th Birthday fell on the day after I was discharged from hospital and two days before Christmas Day.

Despite having to hide the surgery drains in the deep pockets of a long cardigan, we were able to meet up at the care home with my brother, and celebrate Mum’s birthday with her as we always had done.

Carrying on as normal was the only option, and it normalised this otherwise difficult time. It was lovely to be spending precious time as a family and a much needed diversion after the time spent in hospital.

There were enough distractions with presents, prosecco and a beautiful birthday cake topped with fresh fruit for Mum to not notice anything unusual about me!

My first book – ‘See the Colour in the Clouds’ tells the story of my first journey with breast cancer, when my daughters were just 8yrs and 5yrs, and how they played such an important role in my recovery.
