Five years on
As soon as we knew the inescapable journey that lay ahead, we sat with the
girls and brought them into the loop.
It was five years on from my first encounter with breast cancer, Lulu was now
13yrs and Anna nearly 11yrs. In some ways we thought it may be easier because
they were more self-sufficient, but we also knew that they were more
emotionally mature and would find the concept of breast cancer much more
threatening now than when they were younger, less informed, and easier to
divert.
What a huge difference five years made in the way that the girls reacted to
this news. They were of course much more mature and independent now, but with
that maturity came understanding. Their body language was powerful and telling.
They each reacted to the news in their own way, and after many questions and
lots of talking (when they were ready), we gradually managed to resume the
daily rituals of family life.
The four of us united in our commitment to be strong and supportive to each
other.
My first book – ‘See the Colour in the Clouds’ tells the story of my first
journey with breast cancer, when my daughters were just 8yrs and 5yrs, and how
they played such an important role in my recovery.
