'Twas
the week before Christmas
‘Twas the week before Christmas …and I was admitted into
hospital to have a double mastectomy; in fact my second double mastectomy. But
this time without any reconstruction.
After 4.5 hrs in theatre I awoke from the deepest sleep to
take my first glimpse down at my newly flattened chest. I knew it would take
some time to get used to it, but it felt good to have expelled the demon.
When Ian visited with the girls I felt tense about their
reactions but there was no need because we were so pleased to see each other, it was as if the small
detail of my non-existent breasts was overlooked!
They told me that I didn’t really look any different which
was so good to hear.
Two days later and after some physiotherapy sessions, I was
discharged from hospital with the surgery drains still attached, swinging in
patterned fabric bags each side of me like last minute Christmas shopping!
My first book – ‘See the Colour in the Clouds’ tells the
story of my first journey with breast cancer, when my daughters were just 8yrs
and 5yrs, and how they played such an important role in my recovery.
